Eritrea – Greening Eritrea (Part 1)

africa.reuters.com Eritrea’s mangroves show way to fight hunger Wed 21 May 2008, 6:04 GMT By Andrew Cawthorne HIRGIGO, Eritrea, May 21 (Reuters) – Fisherman Ali Osman grins as he hauls a large, yellow-and-silver emperor fish out of the shallow Red Sea waters off Eritrea. A minute later, his friend pulls out a baby shark, sweating in the heat as he chucks it on the rocks. Other fish flop on the sea’s flat surface as four young fishermen wade through the high tide to take back an impressive haul to their village, Hirgigo. “If it wasn’t for the mangroves, there wouldn’t be so many fish,” Ali says, pointing at a thick tree-line marking the border of desert and sea. The forest of newly planted mangrove trees has given fish, crabs and oysters vital shelter to feed and breed in an area where there were previously only arid mud flats. Marine life, and their human hunters, are not the only beneficiaries of an eco-project in this Horn of Africa village that has won global awards as a model for reducing poverty and feeding the hungry. Led by US scientist and humanitarian Gordon Sato, the project has transformed the landscape in an area where there is not enough fresh water to support conventional agriculture. Leaves from the trees — there are around a million mangroves in a six km (four mile) swathe from Hirgigo — provide fodder for livestock. That means villagers no longer have to trek into distant highlands to feed their sheep and goats. In a further benefit of the decade-old

Pet Trout Feeding Frenzy

In this video, it shows me feeding the 3 pet trout I have raised since they were only 3-4 inches each starting in September of 2008. These fish all grew to be 13-15 inches before the passed away in April-May 2009, mainly due to water temperature fluctuations raising and lowering daily, even with careful planning to keep the temperatures colder and below a consistent 70 degrees. Trout can be one of the toughest fish to keep. I was surprised i was able to keep them as long as I did. On average, good, healthy trout will grow 1 inch per month, and that’s what these trout did. Even in 120 Gallon cycled aquarium with all the right natural stuff for them to keep the water clean, oxygenated, ph balanced and mostly chemical free, these babies thrived for quite a while. If you really want to know, yes I did eat them the same day they passed away. They were good eatin too. They were free from any diseas or any other kind of exposure to mercury or chemicals most of their lives, which made them even healthier and safer to eat than most wild fish out there. The UV sterilizer really helped a lot in this process. Most of all, especially during the warmer months, trout definitely need to have an aquarium chiller.

The AccliMate™ promotes species health and reduces potential loss by eliminating ‘net stress.’ The inner tank design allows all species to be transferred without using spine-catching nets. When the AccliMate™ is used to transport species directly from a live fish store, fish can be transported and acclimated in the same unit! Less handling means less stress which means healthier fish. The AccliMate’s™ easy-to-use, automated design now allows you to set it and walk away. The user regulated, dual siphon, Continuous Exchange System (CES) slowly replaces store water with your aquarium water. Unlike other methods of acclimation, that can cross contaminate your aquarium’s water with up to 30% of fish store water, the AccliMate’s™ CES process exchanges out — almost all — store water to minimize potential harm to your tank’s eco system. The iron-grip suction cups not only allow quick and secure mounting of the AccliMate™ to the outside or inside of your aquarium, they can be positioned and re-positioned in a flash without scratch damage to acrylic or glass surfaces.
